Question: We all inherit personality traits from our parents/parents’ family. Where does this fit in the scheme of things? Even if I am a born saint but I inherited certain character traits that are “not holy” --- won’t I end up sinning anyway, regardless of my soul-mate, because of these traits?

God’s answer:

Active ingredient

Original sin brings out the worst in you.

Meaning: Original sin, as is aptly called, is the root of all sins. It is the trigger. It is the reason why we begin sinning and why we continue to sin. If a person has no original sin, no matter how many undesirable traits he/she inherits, they are “dormant” because one would not go against God.

Questions:

  1. Can a born saint then turn out to become very evil because of these inherited traits?

  2. Just as there are born saints, are there also people who are born evil… like you said about Cain and Abel… one is good, one is evil?

God’s answer:

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

You can decide who you are.

Meaning: Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde means “a person marked by dual personality, one aspect of which is good and the other bad14 This is the thing about exercising free-will, we can choose. We like to blame genetics, circumstances and the environment for why we do the things we do and why we are who we are. We are who we are, at any moment in time, because we choose to be so.

God’s statement:

There is no excuse for bad behavior.
